Tuocha is named after it was founded in Xiaguan, Yunnan, an important town on the ancient tea-horse road. The origin of Tuocha has a long history. It was recorded by Sanzhong Zheng in the "Dian Lue (滇略)” of the Ming Dynasty that "all the ordinary tea is used by everyone, and it is steamed and compressed to Tuo.” Dian tea is sold in Tibet and is mainly transported by horse. Tea is fragile and damp, often causing losses to tea merchants. In 1902, some tea merchants in Xiaguan made continuous improvements on the basis of "girl tuocha”, and created a "bowl tea" shaped like a bowl.
In 2002, Xiaguan Tuocha was the first in China's tea industry to obtain the national "Product Registration of Origin Markings"; in 2010, Xiaguan Tuocha production techniques were included in the "National Intangible Cultural Heritage List". On November 1, 2013, Dali Tuo Zhi Yuan Tea Culture Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xiaguan Tuocha Group Company, officially opened. To commemorate the establishment of Tuo Zhi Yuan Tea Culture Company, a star tea product of the same name - Tuo Zhi Yuan was launched.
